Healey announces green planning overhaul
Housing minister John Healey has announced a shake-up of planning policies to help the country cut carbon emissions.
Today (March 9) the government published three planning policy statements on climate change, coastal change and the natural environment. The climate change planning statement combines and updates existing planning policy statements on climate change (PPS1) and renewable energy (PPS22).
Together, the three new policy statements will give councils a “green planning rulebook”, CLG said, to ensure that new sustainable developments are planned and built with the future climate in mind, reducing carbon emissions. The climate change and natural environment planning policy statements are out for consultation until June 1.
Healey made two other announcements, confirming that a further two areas had been added to the proposed ecotown “second wave” – East Devon district council and Fareham borough council – and pledged nearly £! 10 million to help councils increase their “green” knowledge in order to develop sustainable housing and energy sources.
